Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy is a clinical syndrome in which the filtration rate of glomerular decrease causes kidney function not to work properly, with an increase in urea and creatinine levels indicating decreased kidney function. The ethanol extract of red jatropha leaves functions as an antioxidant that has the potential to prevent diabetic nephropathy. This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites in the ethanol extract of jatropha leaves and an effective dose to reduce levels of urea and creatinine in male rats. This study used a laboratory experiment with a modified design with test animals divided into five treatment groups., namely the normal control group, the negative control group, the treatment group with dose of 300, 400, and 500 mg/kg BW. The data obtained were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA. The results showed that the red jatropha leaf extract was positive for secondary metabolites of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins. Giving ethanol extract of red jatropha leaf can reduce urea & creatinine levels in STZ-induced rats but cannot be used in animals and humans because it has toxic effect.because to the death of test animals on 22 day and the study lasted only 21 days, the study was discontinued.
